Missing natural signals

Sealed windows, artificial light on all day, and disconnection from the earth all remove inputs your biology expects — natural light cycles, fresh air exchange, and direct ground contact.

The modern building is engineered for thermal efficiency, which means it is engineered to be sealed. That solves a heating bill and creates a different problem: indoor air is now measured as more polluted than outdoor air in most studies that look, because the same seal that keeps warmth in keeps everything else in with it. Light is the other missing input. Morning sun outdoors delivers tens of thousands of lux; a well-lit room delivers a few hundred. Your circadian clock is reading that difference, and indoors it never gets a clear signal that the day has started — or, after dark, that it has ended. Ground contact is the third. Whatever you make of the grounding research, the plain fact underneath it is that shoes with synthetic soles and floors above the earth mean most people never touch conductive ground at all, which is genuinely new in human history. The fix for all three is the cheapest thing on this page: open a window, go outside within an hour of waking, and put your feet on actual ground sometimes.

Added toxic load

Off-gassing materials, non-stick cookware, blue-heavy lighting, and synthetic cleaning products each add a small, steady input your detox pathways have to process, on top of everything else. The word that matters here is steady.

No single exposure on this list is dramatic, and arguing about any one of them in isolation misses the point. The load is cumulative, it arrives every day, and your liver, kidneys, gut and skin are clearing it on top of ordinary metabolism rather than instead of it. Some of it leaves quickly. Some of it does not: the fluorinated compounds in non-stick coatings, stain treatments and many detergents are called forever chemicals precisely because they resist breaking down, and they accumulate in tissue over years rather than clearing in days. Fragrance deserves its own mention, because it is the one most people never think of as an exposure. A single "fragrance" listing on a label can legally stand in for dozens of undisclosed compounds, and scented candles, plug-ins and laundry products release them into the air you breathe for hours in a room you cannot leave. None of this is a reason for alarm, and it is not a reason to try to live perfectly. It is a reason to remove the two or three largest, cheapest sources — which for most homes are the cleaning cupboard, the air freshener and the non-stick pan — and stop paying for the rest.

This is not only about pans. Everything food touches on the way to your mouth is part of the exposure, and most of it gets overlooked because a plate looks clean.

Non-stick coatings break down at high heat and shed into food, so cast iron, stainless steel and enameled cast iron are the sturdier everyday choices — match the pan to the job rather than reaching for one non-stick set for everything. The bigger daily load is plastic. Plastic utensils, cutting boards, storage containers and cup linings shed microplastics, and heat, acid and abrasion all speed that up: a plastic spoon in a hot pan, hot liquid in a plastic-lined cup, leftovers reheated in the container they were stored in. Dishwashers matter too. Many detergents and rinse aids contain fluorinated compounds, and the surfactant residue left behind on plates, glasses and cutlery does not simply vanish — it is still there at the next meal, and hot food and hot drinks lift it off the surface. PFAS are the reason this is worth taking seriously rather than shrugging at: they are called forever chemicals because they do not meaningfully break down, they accumulate in the body over years, and they are now measurable in serum, with the National Academies publishing clinical follow-up thresholds in 2022. A 2012 JAMA study of 587 children found higher PFAS exposure associated with lower vaccine antibody concentrations — an association, not proof of cause, but a signal worth knowing. The practical version costs nothing: glass, stainless steel, ceramic or wood for anything hot, anything acidic and anything stored. Wooden or metal utensils instead of plastic. An extra rinse on dishes if your detergent is heavily fragranced or lists fluorinated ingredients. You will not eliminate exposure, and that is not the goal — lowering the daily repeated dose is.

That single fact is why filter choice matters: a filter rated too tight for your system is like trying to suck a thick milkshake through a coffee-stirrer straw. The fan has to work harder, airflow drops, and an undersized system can even ice up or short-cycle. As a renter, start with what your system was designed for (check the existing filter's rating or ask your landlord/HVAC tech) and step up gradually — MERV 8 is a basic residential filter, MERV 11-13 catches finer particles and is where most home systems top out comfortably, and MERV 14+ generally needs a system built for it. When in doubt, a slightly lower MERV filter changed on schedule beats a high-MERV filter choking your airflow.

Tap water composition varies a lot by municipality, so the honest first move is finding out what is actually in yours rather than buying a filter and hoping.

Every community water system in the US has to publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report — search your utility's name plus "water quality report" — and it lists what was detected and at what level. Treat it as a starting point, not the answer: it describes water leaving the plant and moving through the mains, and lead in particular is usually picked up on the last stretch, from an old service line or the plumbing and fixtures inside your own building. If the place is older or you rent and cannot see the pipes, a certified lab test of your own tap tells you more than any report can. Then match the filter to what you found. Ordinary activated carbon handles chlorine, taste and odour well. Chloramine — which many cities use instead because it stays stable further down the pipes — is stubborn, and needs catalytic carbon and slower contact time to come out. Reverse osmosis casts the widest net, including most PFAS, at the cost of wasted water, slow flow and stripped minerals, which is why RO users usually remineralise afterward. Read the NSF/ANSI number rather than the marketing: 42 is taste and odour, 53 is health-related contaminants like lead and cysts, 58 covers reverse osmosis, 401 covers emerging compounds, and P473 is the one specific to PFOA and PFOS. A pitcher certified to 42 alone is doing an aesthetic job, not a protective one. Two things almost everyone skips: hardness is not a health contaminant but it shortens filter life considerably, and the shower is an exposure no drinking filter touches — chlorine and chloramine come off hot water as vapour in a small closed room. Incandescent + red lighting vs. LED/blue

Standard LED and fluorescent bulbs are weighted toward blue wavelengths, the same wavelengths that suppress melatonin and signal 'daytime' to your circadian clock.

Warm incandescent bulbs and red-toned bulbs in the evening carry far less blue light. Simple swap: bright/blue-leaning light in the morning and midday, warm incandescent or red bulbs after sunset, especially in the rooms you wind down in.

Grounding sheets

The idea: a grounding (earthing) sheet or mat connects to your outlet's ground port so your skin stays in electrical contact with the earth overnight, the same contact you'd get standing barefoot outside.

Small existing studies report benefits like better sleep and lower inflammatory markers, but the body of research is still early and modest in size. Dirty electricity — erratic high-frequency noise riding on ordinary household wiring — is a related, genuinely contested topic: the wiring-noise part is measurable, but how much it matters biologically is still debated. Worth trying for the low cost and low risk; worth holding loosely as 'promising, not proven.'

Sleep environment

Blackout curtains or a sleep mask, no lights or LEDs left glowing in the bedroom (including standby lights on chargers and electronics), and deep pink noise instead of silence or a bright screen to fall asleep to.

Keep your phone out of the bed and ideally out of the room — if it has to be nearby, a real EMF-blocking phone bag (one that actually attenuates signal, not a sticker) or a physical barrier between the phone and your body is the honest option. A phone on airplane mode, charging across the room, solves most of this for free.

Honest evidence note

Grounding sheets and dirty-electricity mitigation are areas with real, ongoing research and small positive studies — not settled science. We present the theory and where the evidence currently stands rather than a flat claim in either direction. Worth trying for the cost; worth staying honest about what's proven.

Materials

What touches your food and drink

The material something is made of decides whether it can leach anything into what you eat or drink — especially with hot, fatty, or acidic foods, where leaching potential goes up across nearly every material category.

Wooden spoons

Don't scratch cookware, don't conduct heat into your hand, and don't leach anything into hot food the way some plastic utensils can at high temperatures.

Glass tupperware

Glass doesn't absorb odors or stain, and it goes from fridge to microwave to dishwasher without the coating or plastic-leaching questions that come with plastic containers, especially with hot or acidic food.

Drink from glass or copper

Glass and copper drinkware sidestep any question of what a container's inner lining might contribute to a drink, particularly anything acidic. For a canteen or thermos, a glass-lined option is the same preference applied on the go — and skip plastic straws entirely; reusable metal or silicone is a simple swap.

A Preference, Not a Warning

Stainless steel is a fine, widely used food-contact material — this is not a claim that it causes mineral imbalances or any other harm; that stronger claim isn't well supported. Our preference for glass or copper is simply that they carry zero leaching potential at all, especially with acidic foods like tomato sauce or citrus, so when you have the choice, they're the option with nothing to weigh at all.

A few more low-effort swaps: skip the microwave when you can (a toaster oven, steam oven, or stovetop reheats food without the same energetic and molecular disruption); pass on plastic straws in favor of reusable metal or silicone; and if you carry a canteen or thermos daily, a glass-lined one applies the same leaching-free preference on the go.

DIY cleaning

  • Hand soap — a castile soap base with essential oils
  • All-purpose surface spray — white vinegar, water, and citrus or tea tree essential oil
  • Bathroom scrub — baking soda paste with a few drops of essential oil for grout and tile
  • Laundry detergent — washing soda, castile soap, and baking soda
  • Dishwasher detergent — washing soda, citric acid, and salt
  • Produce wash — water, white vinegar, and a splash of baking soda to rinse residue off fruit and vegetables

DIY personal care

  • Toothpaste — baking soda, coconut oil, and a food-grade essential oil
  • Deodorant — coconut oil, baking soda or arrowroot powder, and shea butter
  • Body soap — castile soap base with carrier oils added for skin
  • Shampoo — castile soap or a no-poo baking-soda rinse, depending on hair type
  • Conditioner — diluted apple cider vinegar rinse

Kitchen traditions and home remedies

These are traditional, immune-supporting kitchen preparations passed down for generations -- honestly labeled, not oversold. Some have real antimicrobial lab data behind their individual compounds. None of them are antibiotics, none of them treat an infection, and none replace medical care when you actually need it.

Oregano oil

Carvacrol, the main compound in oregano oil, shows antimicrobial activity against several organisms in lab (in vitro) studies. That's real, published lab data — it is not the same thing as a clinical trial proving it clears an infection in a person, and it isn't a substitute for medical care when you need it.

"Firewater"

A traditional cold-season preparation — typically raw garlic, onion, ginger, horseradish, and hot pepper steeped in vinegar or citrus. The individual ingredients (garlic, ginger) have documented compounds with antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory activity in lab studies. It's a kitchen tradition worth knowing, not a clinically proven treatment.

Garlic-honey

Raw garlic and raw honey both have some antimicrobial lab data behind their individual compounds (allicin in garlic; hydrogen peroxide and low water activity in honey). A traditional, food-based preparation people reach for — again, not a substitute for seeing a provider when you're actually sick.

Worth Saying Plainly

Traditional and immune-supporting, not "antibiotic" and not a treatment for infection. If you have a fever that won't break, symptoms that are getting worse, or anything that concerns you, see a provider — these preparations are a kitchen tradition alongside good care, never instead of it.

Food preservation with mason jars

A simple, low-cost way to keep food fresh longer and cut down on plastic packaging in the kitchen.

  • Meat — pressure-canned or cured and stored short-term in the fridge, never left at room temperature
  • Grain and dry goods — rice, oats, and flour stay pest-free and fresh far longer sealed in glass than in the original bag
  • Spices — glass blocks light and air, the two things that fade a spice's potency fastest
  • Vegetables — pressure-canned or fermented (think sauerkraut, pickles) in a proper canning jar
  • Fruit — water-bath canned into jams, compotes, or whole preserved fruit
