What the Number Actually Reflects

You place your hand on the reader. Light goes in, and the reader measures how much of it is absorbed by one specific family of antioxidant micronutrients — the ones you get mainly from fruits and vegetables — where they collect in your skin. Fifteen seconds later you have a number.

That is the whole measurement, and the precision matters: it is a specific family of antioxidant micronutrients, not every antioxidant, not every vitamin, not every mineral. Because these build up in skin over weeks to months, the number reflects a season of eating and absorbing, not last night's dinner. Anyone telling you the number is your overall antioxidant status is overselling it, and that overclaim is the fair half of every criticism this technology gets.

The Limits

What this measurement cannot tell you

This section exists because the pages selling this technology do not have one. Read it before you decide whether the number is worth anything to you.

It does not cover most of your nutrition

It says nothing about your vitamin C or vitamin E status, and nothing at all about vitamin D, B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, iron or omega-3s. It is one family of antioxidant micronutrients, not every antioxidant, vitamin and mineral you have.

It cannot separate one micronutrient from another

You get one number, not a breakdown. And because skin stores some of these micronutrients more readily than others, the ones most associated with eye health and cognition are under-represented in it. Dr. C-Y. Oliver Chen of the Tufts HNRCA Antioxidants Research Lab makes both points in the Tufts Health and Nutrition Letter, independently of us.

It does not diagnose anything

A high number is not a certificate of health, and a low number is not a diagnosis of anything. It is not a substitute for blood work or for your provider, and no reading here should change a medication or a treatment.

One reading on its own means very little

Normal variation is around ten percent, so two readings a week apart can differ without anything having changed in you. The trend across months is the measurement. A single number is the raw material.

The reading can be thrown off by your hand

Lotion, hand sanitizer, self-tanner and dirt all sit between your skin and the light. Clean, dry, product-free hands, and the same hand every time.

Some people should not bother

If you already eat a wide range of vegetables every day and you are not trying to verify whether something you take is being absorbed, a number will not change what you do next. We would rather say that than sell you a reading you do not need.

Re-Testing

How often to re-test, and how long a change takes to show

Short answer: every 8 to 12 weeks, and monthly is about as often as a change is real rather than noise. Here is the reasoning, in three windows.

Days 1-14

Noise. Normal variation, and nothing you changed has had time to accumulate in skin yet. Do not read anything into it.

Weeks 3-6

A direction. If something is moving, this is where it starts to show above the ordinary variation.

Weeks 8-12

A real trend. This is the window where a sustained change is genuinely measurable.

Where those windows come from. A registered, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 12-week trial (Hester and colleagues, 2026, NCT06749808) with 46 adults completing it — 29 on a multivitamin, 17 on placebo. The readings did not separate from placebo until week 4 on one reader and week 8 on the newer one, and at 12 weeks the supplement group was up 42% on one and 41% on the other, with no change in the placebo group. That is a group average from one trial on one formulation, not a forecast for your reading.

Is this the same as the scan people talk about?

Yes. Same family of technology: an optical reader, a hand on a window, a number in seconds. If you met one at an expo, a gym, a chiropractor's office or a friend's kitchen table, this is that measurement.

What is usually missing is everything above this line — what the number is accurate to, what it does not cover, and how long to wait before re-testing. We call it a test rather than a scan because scan describes what the machine does, not what you learn. Same measurement. More of the story.

For scale: a DEXA body-composition reading is 2 to 4 percent, a heart-rate wearable 2 to 5 percent, a single blood draw 5 to 10 percent, a bioimpedance body-fat reading 5 to 10 percent, a blood-pressure cuff 5 to 15 percent, and a continuous glucose monitor 10 to 20 percent. That range is ordinary for a health measurement, and it is exactly why no trusted number -- blood pressure, glucose, or this one -- is read from one measurement.

How often should I re-test my antioxidant levels?

Every 8 to 12 weeks for most people, and monthly is about as often as it tells you anything new. Whichever device gives you the number, the rules are the same: follow the trend on one device, and give it 8 to 12 weeks.

Why did my number go down?

Usually something ordinary. Normal variation between readings is around ten percent, so a small drop may be nothing at all. Beyond that: fewer fruits and vegetables over the past several weeks, a stretch of short sleep or heavy stress, travel, smoking, or simply lotion, hand sanitizer or dirt on the hand you measured. Clean, dry, product-free skin matters. A lower number is information, not a diagnosis.

Who should not bother with this?

People who already eat a wide range of vegetables every day and are not trying to find out whether something they take is actually being absorbed.
