Why this is a system, not a membrane
Exchange is not one barrier, it is a chain of them, and they are linked. The gut decides what enters the bloodstream. The blood delivers it. The capillary wall decides what reaches the tissue. The cell membrane decides what gets inside the cell. The mitochondrial membrane decides what reaches the furnace. A nutrient can be eaten, absorbed, carried and still never arrive — and each of those borders needs its own conditions to work. This is why 'I take that supplement' and 'that nutrient reached my cells' are two different statements.

EstablishedA double layer of fat with proteins embedded in it. Because it is built from the fats you eat, the quality of those fats changes how well the membrane works — how flexible it is, and how well its gates and receptors sit in it.

Channels and pumps
EstablishedSpecific proteins let specific things through — sodium, potassium, calcium, water. Some are gates that open on a signal; others are pumps that spend energy to move things against the flow. This is where a large share of your daily energy budget goes.

Mitochondrial exchange
EstablishedFuel and oxygen in, energy and carbon dioxide out, across a second set of membranes inside the cell. The gradient across that inner membrane is literally what powers you.

Waste export
EstablishedCells actively pump out what they cannot use, including compounds that would otherwise accumulate. When export slows, the cell is dealing with its own by-products on top of everything else.

The lymphatic system
EstablishedThe drainage network that clears fluid and waste from tissue. It has no pump of its own — it moves when you move, which makes it one of the few systems that is genuinely dependent on your behaviour.

EstablishedA lining one cell thick separating what you swallowed from your bloodstream, with junctions between the cells that open and close. It is the largest and busiest border you own, and the most consequential when it loosens.

The microbiome
EstablishedTrillions of organisms trading with you across that gut wall — breaking down what you cannot, making vitamins and short-chain fats, and occupying space that would otherwise host something less friendly. This is exchange as a relationship, not a filter.

Lungs and gas exchange
EstablishedOxygen in, carbon dioxide out, across a surface with enormous area folded into a small space. How you breathe changes the gas balance in your blood within a few breaths, which is why breathing is a lever and not just a background process.
Relays to blood pH, heart rate, and nervous-system state.
Skin
EstablishedA barrier that is also permeable — it keeps water in and most things out, but not everything. What sits on it for hours matters more than what touches it briefly.

Kidney filtration
EstablishedBlood is filtered continuously and the useful parts are reclaimed. Minerals are not simply excreted — they are actively recovered, which means kidney function and mineral status are the same conversation.

The blood-brain barrier
EstablishedA tighter border again, protecting the brain from most of what circulates. It is selective rather than sealed, and its integrity tracks with the same things that affect the gut lining.

The hand-off — a nutrient's actual journey
Every border in the chain has to work. Naming them in order shows where an intervention can silently fail.

You eat something. Stomach acid and enzymes break it into pieces small enough to cross.

The gut lining decides what passes into the bloodstream — helped or hindered by the microbiome living on it.

Blood carries it, often bound to a transport protein, which itself has to be available.

At the tissue, it crosses the capillary wall and reaches the fluid around the cells.

The cell membrane admits it, if the right transporter is present and the cell is asking for it.

Inside, it crosses one more membrane to reach the mitochondria, if that is where it is needed.

Waste from all of this exits the same way in reverse — and if any border is slow, the whole chain backs up.

Cell
This page. What crosses the boundary, in both directions, and what decides.
Mind
At the mind level this is Feel: what you let land and what you let out. Boundaries at the level of emotion follow the same logic — too open and everything floods in, too closed and nothing nourishing gets through either.
Meaning
At the level of Meaning this is Sharing: what you give and what you receive. A border that only takes in, or only gives out, fails at every scale.
What this means for you
- Absorption is not a single event. If something is not working, ask which border in the chain is the weak one rather than raising the dose.
- Membranes are built from the fats you eat. That is the most direct link between diet and how well every receptor in your body sits and functions.
- The lymphatic system has no pump. Movement is not optional for drainage — it is the mechanism.
- Barriers behave alike. Gut lining, blood-brain barrier and skin respond to overlapping inputs, which is why gut work so often shows up as clearer thinking.
