Labor Day Is a Scam. Getting Your Health Back Is the Real Unpaid Job

9 min read

The largest workforce in this country is healthcare, and it is not healthcare. A nurse's argument about taxes, specialists, the holiday calendar, and why understanding your own body became unpaid labor.

Not the day off. The day off is the only honest part of it. The scam is what the day quietly celebrates: that a life is something you spend building someone else's, and that the arrangement is so normal it gets a barbecue. I am a nurse. I have watched excellent care delivered for the thing that was named, and no care at all for the thing that caused it. Nobody was careless. The system is built to name and to bill, and what causes the naming sits upstream of anything a billing code can describe. Where I add my own read below, I label it as my view. That is this site's standing rule.

A country went to war over taxation. Look at what you hand over now

In 1776 this country went to war over roughly three percent. Not over a crisis of disease, not over a broken food supply. Over money taken without consent, and over having no say in it. Now add up what a working person hands over across income, payroll, sales, property and fuel, and ask yourself what the number is today. My view, and I will own it: we crossed the line that started a revolution a long time ago and nobody called it. Historians will argue about the exact colonial figure and about how much of 1776 was the rate versus the representation. Fine. Argue about the decimal. The shape is not in question.

And you were born into it. Nobody read you the terms

You never signed anything. You were born into a tax system, handed a number, and expected to comply with a code written in a language nobody teaches you. My view, and this is me talking, not a citation: you practically have to decode maritime law to get at the privileges the people at the top use legally and in the open. Their corporations hold rights and protections you do not -- legal personhood, limited liability no individual gets, and the ability to spend more on interpreting the rules than you will earn in a year obeying them. The code is not hidden. It is written in a dialect, and fluency is sold by the hour. A system you never agreed to, written to exclude you, is not neutral, and the people who can most afford the translation are the ones who pay the least.

The largest workforce in this country is not building anything

Healthcare employs more people here than almost any other sector. Millions of them, most of them exhausted, most of them good at their jobs. And it is not healthcare. It is sickness care, staffed by people who are themselves getting sick doing it. That is not a slogan, it is measured: shift work in nurses tracks with disrupted sleep quality and cortisol regulation [1], with glucose variability and diet in healthcare employees [2], and with cardiovascular and kidney risk [3]. We hold 58 studies on shift work and 95 on burnout. The people in those studies are the ones holding the whole thing up.

There is a specialist for your pinky joint

There is a specialist for one part of your eye. One for the joints. One for the heart. One for the nerves that run to all of it. Every one of them is excellent, and that is not the problem. The problem is that a specialist is paid to be excellent at one organ, and nobody is paid to be responsible for the whole. Your gut affects your mood. Your sleep affects your blood sugar. Your blood sugar affects your hormones, and your hormones affect your sleep. Medicine knows this. It is simply not how care is organised, because the org chart is the billing structure.

The calendar is not neutral either

Cold and flu season lines up with the holidays. So does the sugar. So does the alcohol. October brings Halloween, November brings the feast, December brings a month of it, then a manufactured February holiday, then a summer of the same. Each one arrives with more processed food and more alcohol, and each one moves a body further from its ordinary state. My view: nobody planned this as a conspiracy. It is that every one of those days has an industry attached to it, and none of those industries are paid to return you to baseline.

  • 411 studies on alcohol sit in our library, supporting and null and adverse together.
  • Ultra-processed intake tracks with sleep quality [4] and with blood pressure [5] -- read them and draw your own line.
  • 401 on circadian rhythm -- the system most disrupted by a season of late nights.
  • 41 on ultra-processed food, and 12 specifically on added sugar.
  • 208 on statins, because 'here, take this' is not the same as 'here is what is happening in you'.

The insurance scam, and why we left it

They work hard to tax everything about your health. That is why we do not use health insurance. We use health sharing, where no one gets paid except the people my monthly payment goes to. That is a choice, not a recommendation, and it is not right for everyone -- but it is worth knowing the option exists, because most people are never told it does.

So on Labor Day, I want you to work less

Here is the part nobody tells you: getting your health back is labor. Enormous, unpaid, badly signposted labor. The information already exists. It is public. It is just written for other researchers, buried behind a paywall, or phrased so that a person without a science background gives up on the second paragraph. That gap is not an accident of style. If you cannot read the evidence, you have to trust the label -- and the label is a marketing surface. So we did the labor and put it in one place, free.

  • Your labs in plain language: what each marker measures, what moves it, and what people commonly notice when it sits out of range.
  • A diet builder that starts from the markers you want to move, not from a meal plan sold to you.
  • Over 100,000 studies, categorised and translated, with the null and adverse findings kept in rather than hidden.
  • The ingredients in the products, with the research attached, so you can check the label against the trial.

You are not a machine

You are a living being inside a larger living system, running on signals -- food, sunlight, electricity, rhythm, touch, silence. Consciousness drives the mind and the mind drives the cells. The same century that learned this also learned how to sell against it: condition the attention, feed the body badly, keep the day full, and free thought becomes expensive. So do not take my word for any of it. Check everything. That is what the library is for.

What to do

Do the unglamorous work no system will bill you for. Understand your trauma. Forgive yourself, and forgive other people. 128 studies on forgiveness and 223 on loneliness sit in that library alongside the biochemistry, because they belong in the same conversation -- social isolation associates with neurological and psychiatric outcomes [6], and with early menopause and mortality in women [7]. Connection is not a soft topic. It is measured. Then learn what your labs actually mean and what actually moves them. Start with one marker you already have a result for, find what moves it, and change one thing. Measure again before you add a second. Not for profit. For purpose.

Key Takeaways

  • Healthcare is one of the largest employers in the country, and most of that labor goes into naming and billing conditions rather than preventing them.
  • A specialist is paid to be excellent at one organ. Nobody is paid to be responsible for the whole, which is why the connections between your systems go unexamined.
  • If you cannot read the evidence yourself, you have to trust the label, and the label is a marketing surface.
  • Getting your health back is real, unpaid, badly signposted labor, and reducing that labor is the entire purpose of this platform.
  • Over 100,000 studies, translated into plain language, with the null and adverse findings kept in rather than hidden.

Healthcare is one of the largest employers in the United States, and most of that labor goes into naming and billing conditions rather than preventing them. The result is that understanding your own body has become unpaid work: reading your own lab results, learning which foods move which markers, and checking whether a claim on a supplement label has any research behind it. The information is already public, but it is written for researchers or sits behind a paywall, so most people never reach it. The Holistic Hub was built to remove that labor: over 100,000 studies translated into plain language, free lab and nutrition tools, and the null and adverse findings kept in rather than hidden.

FAQ

Why is health information so hard to understand?

Because it is written for other researchers, not for you. Most of it sits behind a paywall or opens with three paragraphs of methodology. That gap is not an accident of style: if you cannot read the evidence yourself, you have to trust the label, and the label is a marketing surface.

Why does no doctor look at my whole body?

Because a specialist is paid to be excellent at one organ, and nobody is paid to be responsible for the whole. Your gut affects your mood, your sleep affects your blood sugar, and your blood sugar affects your hormones. Medicine knows this. It is simply not how care is organised, because the org chart follows the billing structure.

Is healthcare really the largest workforce in the country?

Healthcare employs more people in the United States than almost any other sector. The point of naming that is not the ranking. It is that an enormous share of the country's work goes into treating sickness after it appears, and the people doing that work are themselves measurably affected -- shift work in nurses tracks with disrupted sleep quality, cortisol regulation, glucose variability and cardiovascular risk.

What is health sharing and how is it different from insurance?

Health sharing is a membership where members pay each other's medical bills directly rather than paying premiums to an insurer. No one gets paid except the people the payment goes to. It is a choice with real trade-offs and it is not right for everyone, but most people are never told the option exists.

How do I start understanding my own lab results?

Start with one marker you already have a result for. Find out what it actually measures, what is known to move it, and what people commonly notice when it sits out of range. Change one thing, then measure again before adding a second. The lab library and diet builder are free and require no email.
