Put two turmeric bottles side by side. Both say turmeric. Both say 500 mg. One costs six dollars and one costs thirty-two. The obvious conclusion is that somebody is overcharging, and sometimes somebody is. But the more common explanation is that the two bottles contain genuinely different things, and the label is not built to tell you which. This is the single clearest example of a problem that runs through the entire botanical shelf: the name on the front is the plant, and the plant is not the dose.
The root and the extract are not the same material
Dried turmeric root is only a few percent curcuminoids by weight. A standardised turmeric extract is commonly sold at around ninety-five percent. Both can be labelled turmeric without anyone breaking a rule, and there is more than an order of magnitude between them in the compounds every trial you have read about was actually run on. So 500 mg of ground root and 500 mg of standardised extract are the same number describing two materials that are not remotely comparable. If you are reading a study and then reading a label, that gap is where the reasoning quietly breaks.
What standardisation actually is
Standardisation is not a marketing word, it is a manufacturing process, and a boring, expensive one. The manufacturer measures a marker compound in every batch, usually by chromatography, holds it to a stated percentage, and prints that percentage. That is what a label reading standardised to 24 percent is for. It is the difference between a product whose strength is known and a product whose strength rides on whatever the harvest gave you. Without it, a strong batch and a weak batch go into the same bottle under the same label, and there is no way for you to tell which one you bought -- or for the manufacturer to tell you, because nobody measured.

A ratio tells you how much was reduced. A standardised percentage tells you what is actually in there. They are not substitutes for each other, and if a label offers only the ratio, it has answered the easier question.
This is not only a turmeric problem
It shows up wherever a plant is sold by name. Red yeast rice is the sharpest measured example: in supplements labelled as containing the same amount of red yeast rice, the monacolin K content varied more than fortyfold between products, and the ratio of the different monacolins differed from authentic material [1]. In a separate analysis of thirty-one red yeast rice supplements, thirteen gave no monacolin content on the label at all, and among those that did, only half actually contained the declared amount [2]. Ginkgo supplements on the European market were found to show several distinct patterns of adulteration, including more or less extract than declared and undeclared added plant material [3]. Standardisation buys you two real things: consistency between batches, and comparability between products. It does not by itself buy you an effect. A marker compound means the amount is known, not that the marker is the compound doing the work -- and for some plants the active constituent is genuinely unsettled science, with whole-extract effects that a single marker does not capture. Anyone telling you a standardised percentage is proof of anything beyond strength is overselling it. What it removes is the guesswork, which is a lot, and it is a precondition for the research applying to your bottle at all. It is not the finish line.
And even a known dose still has to dissolve
There is one more step people skip, and turmeric is the textbook case for it. Curcuminoids are poorly soluble in water, which is why so many products advertise enhanced absorption. When eight commercial turmeric supplements were put through simulated digestion, every one of them released under forty percent of its curcuminoids, and several products marketed as enhanced formulations disintegrated poorly [5]. So the chain has three links, not one: how much active compound is in the capsule, whether the capsule releases it, and whether your body absorbs what was released. A label speaks to the first link only, and only if it is standardised.
What to ask, standing in the aisle
You do not need a chemistry background to close most of this gap, you need four short questions, and any company that measures its own material can answer them without hesitating. If a brand cannot tell you the standardised percentage, that is not proof of a bad product -- but it does tell you the strength was not measured, which means nobody involved knows it either.
- Is this the whole root or an extract? Both are legitimate, and they are not interchangeable.
- Standardised to what percentage of which compound?
- If it gives a ratio like 10:1, is there also a standardised percentage? The ratio alone is the easier answer.
