Whole-food sources — and how to actually get enough.
Most adults eat roughly half the fiber their gut thrives on. The fix is not a supplement — it is more whole, varied plants. Diversity matters as much as total grams: different fibers feed different bacteria, so a wide range of plants across a week does more than a big dose of any single one.
- Legumes (the fiber all-stars): lentils, black beans, chickpeas, split peas — rich in both soluble fiber and resistant starch that bacteria love
- Whole grains: oats, barley, quinoa, brown rice, whole rye — oats and barley are especially high in soluble beta-glucan
