The goal is to hold two true things at once. First: formal education gave most of us literacy, numeracy, structure, and teachers who genuinely changed our lives. That is real and worth protecting. Second: the system those teachers work inside carries incentives and habits worth questioning — not to tear it down, but to make sure the people moving through it come out as thinkers rather than repeaters.
What the system was built to do.
The model of mass schooling most countries still use took shape in the 19th and early 20th centuries — age-based grades, bells, standardized subjects, ranked testing. Historians of education have long noted that this design borrowed heavily from the factory: sort large numbers of children efficiently, teach them to follow instructions and keep time, and produce a predictable, standardized output.

That was a reasonable answer to an industrial economy. The open question is whether it is still the right answer for a world that now rewards creativity, judgment, and the ability to learn things no one has taught you yet.
What it rewards well
Following instructions, meeting deadlines, sitting still, absorbing a fixed body of material, and reproducing the expected answer on demand. These are real skills. A functioning society needs people who can do them.
What it rewards less
Asking why the expected answer is the expected answer. Sitting with an unsolved problem. Disagreeing with the textbook and defending it with evidence. Following your own curiosity down a path no one assigned. Critics argue these — the very habits that produce original thinkers — are the ones the system most often trains out of children.
The compliance trap
When the highest reward goes to the student who reproduces the material most faithfully, the quiet lesson learned is: the safest move is to agree with authority. That lesson does not stay in the classroom. It follows people into how they treat medicine, media, government, and their own health.
Follow the incentives.
None of this requires a villain. Systems produce whatever their incentives reward, and the incentives inside mass education point toward standardization more than toward independent thought. Documented gaps worth naming:
- Standardized testing rewards the measurable and predictable. Curiosity, originality, and hard-to-score judgment tend to get squeezed out because they do not show up cleanly on a scantron.
- Funding and rankings are often tied to test performance, so schools are pushed to teach to the test — narrowing what gets taught to what gets measured.
- Credentials increasingly function as gatekeepers. A degree signals you completed the system, which is not the same thing as signaling you can think. The open question is how much of the rising cost of credentials buys genuine learning versus buys the signal.
- Teachers are frequently underpaid and overloaded relative to their impact, then handed rigid curricula and testing mandates that limit how much room they have to actually teach. Follow the incentives and you find the constraint lands on the people best positioned to inspire.
- Textbook and curriculum content is shaped by committees, publishers, and political pressure, which tends to favor the settled and consensus version of a subject over the open, contested, still-being-argued version — exactly the version that trains judgment.
The honest framing is not that education is a conspiracy. It is that a system built for industrial-era standardization still runs on industrial-era incentives, and those incentives quietly favor compliance over questioning. Name the incentive and you can work around it.
Science is a method, not an authority.
Here is the single most valuable thing a school could teach and too often does not: science is not a body of facts to be memorized and believed. It is a method — observe, hypothesize, test, try to prove yourself wrong, and revise when the evidence demands it. Real science is defined by doubt, not by certainty. Every major advance came from someone questioning the accepted answer.
When you are told to 'trust the science,' the most scientific response is to ask: which study, how big, funded by whom, replicated by whom, and what would prove it wrong? That is not anti-science. That IS science. Treating any finding as beyond question is the one thing the scientific method was invented to prevent.
Teaching children that science equals a fixed list of correct answers — rather than a living process of questioning — produces adults who defer to whoever wears the label of expert. Teaching them the method produces adults who can evaluate a claim on its merits. One creates followers. The other creates thinkers. Both can recite the same facts on test day; only one can think when the facts are contested.
The solution: build thinkers, at any age.
This is the part that matters most, because a critique without an alternative is just noise. You do not need to leave the school system to fix its blind spots. You can supplement it — for yourself and for your kids — with habits that the system underweights. None of this is expensive. Most of it is free.
Teach kids to ask why — and mean it
When a child asks 'why,' the worst answer is 'because that's how it is.' The best is 'great question — how could we find out?' Reward the question more than the right answer. A kid who feels safe questioning a teacher, a textbook, or you is building the exact muscle the system tends to suppress. Model it: let them catch you being wrong and changing your mind.
Make self-education normal
The most important shift of this era is that world-class learning is now free and on demand. Libraries, open courseware from major universities, documentaries, primary sources, and deep long-form conversations are all a search away. Teach kids — and yourself — that formal schooling is a starting point, not the finish line, and that the person who keeps learning after the diploma wins.
Install critical-thinking habits
A short, teachable toolkit: Who is saying this? What do they gain if I believe it? What is the actual evidence, and how strong is it? Who disagrees, and what is their best argument? What would change my mind? Run any claim — an ad, a headline, a health recommendation, a school lesson — through those five questions and you have out-thought most of the noise.
Steelman before you dismiss
Train the habit of stating the other side's strongest case before disagreeing with it. It is the fastest cure for lazy thinking and the surest sign of a mind that is actually reasoning rather than just repeating its tribe.
Read widely and across disagreement
Deliberately read people who reach different conclusions from good-faith reasoning. Comfort with disagreement is where independent judgment is forged. A mind only ever fed one view is not educated — it is trained.
