How it works

  • Exchange -- the plant omega-3, the one in flax, chia and walnuts. It is an ESSENTIAL fat -- the body cannot make it -- and it is the parent the body tries to lengthen into EPA and then DHA.

  • Build -- THE CONVERSION IS THE WHOLE STORY, and it is poor. Only a small and highly variable fraction becomes EPA, and less again becomes DHA, with the step limited by the same delta-6 desaturase that omega-6 competes for. So a high-linoleic diet lowers the yield further. This is why ALA is not a substitute for marine EPA and DHA and must never be presented as one.

  • Sense -- incorporated into membrane phospholipids in its own right, not only as a precursor.

Form matters

The same nutrient can be made in very different forms -- and a study done on one form does not automatically apply to another. Methylcobalamin is not cyanocobalamin; magnesium glycinate is not magnesium oxide; a whole-food extract is not the synthetic isolate that was studied. Two things decide whether what is in the bottle behaves like the research: the exact form, and independent lab verification (a Certificate of Analysis) that the form and dose on the label are truly what is inside. Without a COA, you are trusting a label, not the science.
