Omega-3 (EPA and DHA)

Fat -- also: omega-3, omega 3, fish oil

One ingredient, seen the whole way through: what it is, how it works, the honest evidence, the form that matters, the systems it touches, and the studies behind it.

How it works

  • Exchange -- EPA and DHA are the two long-chain marine omega-3s, and they belong together. Trials that show a benefit almost always use them together, and the body converts and uses them as a pair -- splitting them into separate stories misrepresents how the evidence was actually generated.

  • Build -- DHA is the structural fat, concentrated in brain grey matter, synapses and the retina. EPA is the signalling fat, the substrate for the E-series resolvins that end an inflammatory response rather than suppress it.

  • Maintain -- THESE FATS NEED VITAMIN E, and this is the part most omega-3 advice skips. Their multiple double bonds are exactly what makes them useful in a membrane and exactly what makes them oxidation-prone. Vitamin E is the lipid-phase antioxidant that sits IN the membrane with them and takes the hit first. Taking omega-3s without adequate vitamin E is loading a membrane with fragile fat and no protection for it.

  • Sense -- incorporated into membrane phospholipids, where they set fluidity and how receptors sit and signal.

Form matters

The same nutrient can be made in very different forms -- and a study done on one form does not automatically apply to another. Methylcobalamin is not cyanocobalamin; magnesium glycinate is not magnesium oxide; a whole-food extract is not the synthetic isolate that was studied. Two things decide whether what is in the bottle behaves like the research: the exact form, and independent lab verification (a Certificate of Analysis) that the form and dose on the label are truly what is inside. Without a COA, you are trusting a label, not the science.
