MINERAL

Desiccated oyster

Mineral -- also: Crassostrea gigas, dried oyster, oyster extract

One ingredient, seen the whole way through: what it is, how it works, the honest evidence, the form that matters, the systems it touches, and the studies behind it.

How it works

  • Exchange -- whole-food source of zinc, copper, selenium, and iodine -- trace minerals that serve as enzymatic cofactors for cross-membrane transport reactions

  • Build -- zinc is required for synthesis of hundreds of structural and enzymatic proteins

  • Maintain -- replenishes trace-mineral stores in people with dietary insufficiency

  • Adapt -- freeze-drying/desiccation concentrates the mineral content per gram compared with fresh oyster meat, but the process does not change mineral bioavailability, so a capsule's effective dose depends on how much of the original oyster mass it actually represents

  • Exchange -- oyster-derived zinc is bound within a whole-food protein matrix rather than as an isolated salt, which some absorption research suggests may aid uptake relative to certain poorly absorbed inorganic zinc salts like zinc oxide, though head-to-head human bioavailability data specific to oyster is limited

Form matters

The same nutrient can be made in very different forms -- and a study done on one form does not automatically apply to another. Methylcobalamin is not cyanocobalamin; magnesium glycinate is not magnesium oxide; a whole-food extract is not the synthetic isolate that was studied. Two things decide whether what is in the bottle behaves like the research: the exact form, and independent lab verification (a Certificate of Analysis) that the form and dose on the label are truly what is inside. Without a COA, you are trusting a label, not the science.
