How it works

  • Exchange — core component of hemoglobin and transferrin, the proteins that carry and hand off oxygen across cell membranes throughout the body

  • Transform — iron-sulfur clusters and cytochromes in the electron transport chain are required for oxidative ATP production

  • Build — required for DNA synthesis via ribonucleotide reductase, and is the structural core of hemoglobin and myoglobin built during red blood cell production

  • Maintain — cofactor for catalase, an antioxidant enzyme that breaks down hydrogen peroxide; note iron is also pro-oxidant in excess via Fenton chemistry, a genuine both-directions caveat

  • Process — required for myelin synthesis and dopamine production; deficiency in children is linked to impaired attention and cognitive development

Form matters

The same nutrient can be made in very different forms — and a study done on one form does not automatically apply to another. Methylcobalamin is not cyanocobalamin; magnesium glycinate is not magnesium oxide; a whole-food extract is not the synthetic isolate that was studied. Two things decide whether what is in the bottle behaves like the research: the exact form, and independent lab verification (a Certificate of Analysis) that the form and dose on the label are truly what is inside. Without a COA, you are trusting a label, not the science.

Iron absorption depends heavily on what else is in the meal -- vitamin C converts non-heme (plant-source) iron into a more absorbable form, while copper is required to build ceruloplasmin, the enzyme that loads iron onto its transport protein, so iron status is entangled with both nutrients rather than determined by iron intake alone.
