How it works
Build — forms disulfide bonds that give structural strength to keratin and collagen, and is the core atom in the amino acids cysteine and methionine
Maintain — the sulfur atom in cysteine is the reactive core of glutathione, the body's primary intracellular antioxidant, and sulfation is a major phase II liver detoxification/conjugation pathway
Exchange — dietary organic sulfur comes mainly from the sulfur-containing amino acids methionine and cysteine in protein foods, plus allium and cruciferous vegetable compounds -- MSM is a minor, more bioavailable supplemental sulfur-donor form rather than how most dietary sulfur is obtained
Maintain — sulfate groups (built from sulfur) are also required to activate certain hormones and neurotransmitters and to help clear drugs and toxins through phase II sulfation in the liver, a detoxification role distinct from sulfur's structural collagen/keratin function
Form matters
The same nutrient can be made in very different forms — and a study done on one form does not automatically apply to another. Methylcobalamin is not cyanocobalamin; magnesium glycinate is not magnesium oxide; a whole-food extract is not the synthetic isolate that was studied. Two things decide whether what is in the bottle behaves like the research: the exact form, and independent lab verification (a Certificate of Analysis) that the form and dose on the label are truly what is inside. Without a COA, you are trusting a label, not the science.
