Paired with lutein in AREDS2 (2mg dose). The newer international Eye Formula label adds zeaxanthin, but the current US dose is unconfirmed — avoid AREDS2-equivalence claims until the label is verified.
How it works
Sense — concentrates at the very center of the macula (the fovea), complementing lutein's more peripheral distribution
Maintain — antioxidant protection of the densely packed photoreceptor membranes in the fovea
Perceive — contributes to macular pigment density relevant to central visual acuity and glare handling
Exchange — zeaxanthin and lutein compete for the same lipid-transport and macular-uptake pathways, and the ratio between them -- rather than either alone -- is what the AREDS2 formula was designed around, which is why this ingredient is discussed alongside lutein rather than in isolation
Maintain — a specific enzyme (BCO2 and related isomerases) converts a portion of dietary lutein into meso-zeaxanthin directly within the retina itself, meaning macular zeaxanthin levels come from both preformed dietary zeaxanthin and this local retinal conversion pathway
Form matters
The same nutrient can be made in very different forms — and a study done on one form does not automatically apply to another. Methylcobalamin is not cyanocobalamin; magnesium glycinate is not magnesium oxide; a whole-food extract is not the synthetic isolate that was studied. Two things decide whether what is in the bottle behaves like the research: the exact form, and independent lab verification (a Certificate of Analysis) that the form and dose on the label are truly what is inside. Without a COA, you are trusting a label, not the science.
