How it works

  • Sense -- concentrates in the macula and filters high-energy blue light before it reaches photoreceptors

  • Maintain -- quenches reactive oxygen species in the lipid-rich retina and in neural (occipital cortex) tissue where it also accumulates

  • Perceive -- raises macular pigment optical density, mechanistically tied to glare recovery and visual processing speed

  • Process -- brain lutein status correlates with cognitive processing speed in observational research, though this is not proof of causation

Form matters

The same nutrient can be made in very different forms -- and a study done on one form does not automatically apply to another. Methylcobalamin is not cyanocobalamin; magnesium glycinate is not magnesium oxide; a whole-food extract is not the synthetic isolate that was studied. Two things decide whether what is in the bottle behaves like the research: the exact form, and independent lab verification (a Certificate of Analysis) that the form and dose on the label are truly what is inside. Without a COA, you are trusting a label, not the science.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only two dietary carotenoids the retina actively concentrates into macular pigment, and a portion of consumed lutein is locally converted into meso-zeaxanthin within the eye itself -- the reason the two are formulated and studied together rather than as separate, unrelated antioxidants.
