How it works
Exchange — zinc and copper each serve as cofactors for numerous enzymes (e.g. superoxide dismutase, carbonic anhydrase) involved in cellular redox and transport reactions
Maintain — maintains the physiological zinc:copper ratio — isolated high-dose zinc supplementation can competitively deplete copper status
Build — both minerals are required for lysyl oxidase (copper-dependent) and multiple zinc-finger transcription factors and matrix metalloproteinases (zinc-dependent) that together build and remodel collagen and connective tissue -- a shared structural role distinct from their individual enzyme-cofactor functions
Maintain — the two minerals are typically formulated together at roughly an 8-15:1 zinc-to-copper ratio, intended to approximate the dietary ratio thought to avoid copper depletion during sustained zinc use rather than an arbitrary combination
Form matters
The same nutrient can be made in very different forms — and a study done on one form does not automatically apply to another. Methylcobalamin is not cyanocobalamin; magnesium glycinate is not magnesium oxide; a whole-food extract is not the synthetic isolate that was studied. Two things decide whether what is in the bottle behaves like the research: the exact form, and independent lab verification (a Certificate of Analysis) that the form and dose on the label are truly what is inside.
