How it works

  • Sense — converted via COX/LOX enzymes into series-3 prostaglandins and series-5 leukotrienes, which are far less inflammatory than the arachidonic-acid-derived versions of the same eicosanoids

  • Maintain — parent molecule for E-series resolvins and protectins — specialized pro-resolving mediators that actively terminate inflammation rather than just blunting it

  • Exchange — incorporates into membrane phospholipids, competing with arachidonic acid for the same enzymatic machinery and shifting overall membrane fatty-acid composition

  • Transform — readily beta-oxidized for energy, used metabolically more than structurally compared with DHA

  • Feel — EPA-predominant (vs. DHA-predominant) fish oil formulations show the more consistent adjunct antidepressant signal of the marine omega-3s in meta-analyses

  • Honest note — as a polyunsaturated fat, EPA is oxidation-prone once incorporated into membranes — vitamin E and other antioxidants are needed to protect it from lipid peroxidation

Form matters

The same nutrient can be made in very different forms — and a study done on one form does not automatically apply to another. Methylcobalamin is not cyanocobalamin; magnesium glycinate is not magnesium oxide; a whole-food extract is not the synthetic isolate that was studied. Two things decide whether what is in the bottle behaves like the research: the exact form, and independent lab verification (a Certificate of Analysis) that the form and dose on the label are truly what is inside. Without a COA, you are trusting a label, not the science.

EPA and DHA are drawn from the same marine-oil source but favor different tissues -- EPA is the more active precursor for eicosanoid (inflammatory-signaling) balance, while DHA concentrates preferentially in neural and retinal membranes, which is why fish-oil products report both figures rather than a single 'omega-3' number.
