Why the evidence supports it

The enzymes that convert T4 into active T3 are selenium enzymes, and in midlife women with low bread intake, plasma selenium predicted the T3-to-T4 ratio. A 2025 review summarized evidence that selenium can lower TPO antibodies in Hashimoto's. The other direction is real too: a double-blind trial in newly diagnosed Graves' disease found no benefit, and in Hashimoto's patients who were not deficient, supplementation was associated with higher antibodies. Selenium has its own U-curve, so it is measured, not assumed.
